Accommodation

Somerville provides accommodation for undergraduates across a range of buildings. Somerville guarantees accommodation on-site for all years of an undergraduate degree, which contributes to a stronger sense of community.

Accommodation fees are the same across rooms, with the exception of any discounted rooms for particular reasons (circulated by the College Treasurer before picking) and rooms with an ensuite bathroom (CHB and ROQ), which incur a 10% surcharge. All rooms are single occupant, and most buildings have a kitchen and laundry room.

Room Ballot

The Room Ballot is the process by which students choose their room for the following academic year. Each student is assigned a position on the room ballot, which determines the order in which you will be able to choose your room.

The ballot is split into years, with those going into third year first, followed by those going into fourth year, and finally those going into second year. The order is determined as follows:

  • Those going into third year and those going into fourth year returning from year abroad – roughly reflecting a reverse of the previous year’s ballot, with a random element incorporated.
  • Those going into fourth year – random assignment.
  • Those going into second year – random assignment.

You will be assigned a position and a time to go select your room choice. You must show up during this, or you may be forced to wait until much later to select. If you cannot make it on the time you are given, you may select someone as your proxy. More information surrounding the specifics of the room ballot will be circulated by the Domestic Officer in mid-Hilary term.

If you need a specific room for religious or dietary reasons, you can email the treasurer at treasurer@some.ox.ac.uk.
